Groomed But Not Doomed 😌

Mama Adaeze used to say, “If a yam stays too long in the ground, it may rot instead of ripen.”

But Adaeze didn’t understand that proverb until much later after the applause faded, after the weight of expectations grew heavier, and the mirror stopped recognizing the girl staring back.

She was the kind of girl mothers pointed to in church and whispered to their daughters, “Be like her.”

Adaeze ticked all the boxes.

First daughter.

Sunday school star.

Matching socks to school.

Never late to morning assembly.

Well-behaved.

Neatly dressed.

Always smiling.

Her JAMB score? Solid.

By the time she entered university, she had perfected the art of being the “good girl”,good grades, good manners, and a good reputation.

She never questioned anything. She just obeyed. And everyone thought she was thriving, blossoming, even.

But deep down, Adaeze was stuck in a silent prison, dressed up as ‘progress.’ She did everything right, yet her soul felt… absent.

She knew how to curtsy before elders but didn’t know how to confront her fears.

She could quote Proverbs 31, but didn’t know who she truly was.She smiled in pictures, but her joy was rehearsed.

It wasn’t that she was lazy or ungrateful. Tufiakwa! Far from it.

She had simply mistaken grooming for growth.

Adaeze had been prepared, but not processed.

Shaped, but not sharpened.

Trained to show up, but never taught to look within.

Then one day, during a panel session she was invited to, someone asked, “Tell us about yourself.”

And she froze…not from fear, but because, for the first time, she realized…she didn’t really know.

That was her awakening. And maybe that’s where many of us are right now.

We confuse polish with purpose. We mistake obedience for identity. We look grown, sound, but deep down, we’ve never truly met ourselves.

We confuse a clean image with clarity. We think being teachable equals being transformed. We’re busy… but are we becoming?

Grooming without inner growth is like watering plastic plants, they stay fresh, but never bear fruit.

It’s like sweeping a house with broken windows. You keep it clean, but you’re still exposed.

Dear Winnies,Are you growing, or are you just performing? Are you becoming, or simply becoming what others expect of you?

Real growth is uncomfortable. It’s messy, stretching, and confronting. It asks “Why?” behind every “What?” It makes you unlearn the lies disguised as life lessons.

It’s when your spirit refuses to be boxed in by society’s checklist.Let’s be clear: grooming isn’t the enemy.

The issue is how we respond to it.

Are you just filling space or getting the pruning you need to grow?

When your shine lacks depth…

When the applause is louder than your inner voice…When you’re “moving forward,” but your soul is silent…

Let this be your reminder:You are not doomed.You can pause.

You can rebel gracefully.

You can reintroduce yourself… to yourself.

You can cry. Break the script. Start again.

You can seek truth, not just tradition.

You can choose purpose over performance.This isn’t the end.

This is your awakening. So if you feel lost, numb, or disconnected, know this:You’re not broken. You’re just overdue for real growth.

Let grooming be your foundation. But let growth be your fire. And in that fire, may your soul be forged, not just fashioned.

You weren’t born to play a role. You were born to live fully. And it’s not too late to start.

Few months ago, I had three blog ideas lined up and ready to go. I successfully birthed two but then… anxiety showed up and tied my flow in knots.
